Battery storage specifications and implementation on the Swedish market
How can battery storage be implemented in Sweden? What would be the benefits and the constraints from a market perspective? What adaptation to the Swedish energy infrastructure will be needed to develop a sustainable and viable energy storage offer?
With the rise of intermittent renewable sources and the increase in the request for electrical capacity in the country, the power network needs to develop energy storage capacities. The different technologies differ by their capacity, reaction time and discharge time. Their uses are, therefore, adapted to their specificities. For instance, the dams (pumped hydro storage) store energy for network congestion relief, peaking and market arbitrage. On the contrary, flywheels act as a power supply and help the frequency regulation.
Among the several energy storage technologies, the industrial battery units present a large spectrum of usages from frequency regulation to renewables smoothing until, in some important configurations, network relief. The existing technologies will take off at an industrial scale in Sweden in the next years and will help to cope with consumption peaks and specific energy needs on the grid networks.
The master thesis aims to support the development of different offers and segments in the market of energy storage in Sweden. In the thesis, the student will study and clarify the constraints and possibilities of battery storage implementation the driving economic factors, rules and regulations in the market and the market as a system. Amongst other tasks, a mapping of relevant stakeholders in the market and their incentives as a foundation for different business cases will be produced.
The student will be supported by the company team (managers, project managers, technicians) and the European OMEXOM network. Their experience feedback will guide the student throughout his or her master thesis.
To summarise, the master thesis must:
- Clarify the constraints and specifications around the market for energy storage in Sweden
- Define the different segments in the market where energy storage will be installed
- Build business cases for the segments
- Inventory the solutions offered by the current market and the evolutions reaching the market in the near future
You will be based in Göthenburg starting from January – February. Further, the master thesis can lead to possible recruitment and career in the Omexom network and VINCI Energies group.
